This time last year I was laying down the foundation of Kathleen Burlew Creative. I knew I wanted to do something like this my entire life. Tie my name to my passion and turn it into a business. I dreamt big this year and I keep dreaming for all that I want to come in the future. I love being busy, even though it means: living on little sleep, too much coffee, and challenges that overwhelm you. From these challenges come ideas, and when I have and idea or I when I want something I need to get it out to universe right then. Accomplish it, create it, whatever. However, now that my 27th year, and my first year as a businesswoman (I'm not sure I can even call myself that yet) are approaching, I'm taking a step back and telling myself that Rome wasn't built in a day.
That's where the photo above comes in. Taken this past May in Aruba deep sea fishing for the first time. I was the only lady on the boat, so "Fast Eddie (as seen in the photo above, middle) told me that I was up first when the fish bites. When it happened I was afraid to jump in the seat because I didn't want to be the one to let that fish get away. But, I didn't really have a choice. When Fast Eddie yells "WE HAVE A BITE...GET YOUR BUTT IN THAT SEAT", you do it. Having known nothing about fishing, I expected to reel only a few times before my beauty appeared above the water. HAAAA. Like a business, fish don't appear when you want them to, they don't come in after a few reels, and you have to be afraid that yes, it might get away. You have to fight them back with blood, sweat, and tears to get that sucker up on the boat.
When I realized what I was in for, there was no turning back. I was going to win that fight. The 3 photos above tell the story of the process 1) "How do I do this?!", "What am I doing?!" "HELP" 2) Eyes on the prize/Full body exertion to 3) SUCCESS!
Heading in to year two, I consider myself in-between steps 1 and 2 with KBC. I know my goals and what I need to accomplish, but there is still that little voice in my head saying "can you really pull this off?" I'm sure any business owner would say that voice is always there, but that's why the fire ignites and the fight continues. Am I going to let this fish get away, or am I going to put up a fight and work hard?
My fight to be successful continues, and I've loved every minute of it. I can't wait to see what 2011 brings, and I can't wait to show you all the ideas that I wanted to create in a day that are now being created genuinely from me with my eye on the prize.
Had to share these cozy holiday decorations from Country Living magazine. The great part about decorating for Christmas is that it's very easy DIY. Also, if you don't want to spend $25-40 on a strand of garland for your mantle....ask for some Christmas tree trimmings at your local tree lot. They give them to you for free and make a great whimsical look for your mantle!
There hasn't really been much that I can think of that I really want for Christmas. It's kind of hard to ask people to buy you a font suite because you love typography. One thing I do have my eye on is carryall bag to haul around my Macbook. These are the varieties I'm drooling over.
